16 Aug Today, the Work of Leadership is Holding Space

Posted at 12:33h in Change, Compassion, Culture, Leadership, Play, Presence, Trust, Wellbeing

We don’t need leaders who tell us everything’s fine and that they have all the answers. Today, the work of leadership starts with recognising that there is still a lot of grieving to be done and intentionally creating spaces for people to be seen and heard. ...

Courage and commitment to the practice of imaginat Courage and commitment to the practice of imagination changes the world. Many of us have lost confidence in our ability to imagine how things might be meaningfully different, but this skill is not lost – only dormant.

Here are a few ways we can reconnect with our imagination muscles:

-	Make connecting with sources of inspiration a daily commitment, whether through nature, poetry, beauty, relationships or spiritual practices.

-	Commit to an exploration of what genuinely matters to you. What made you ‘weird’ as a kid? Where do you find joy and deep satisfaction in your daily life? What brings you alive?

-	Practice your noticing skills, particularly in your immediate neighbourhoods. What are the needs of this place and its people at this time?

-	Understand your own sphere of agency and make small, conscious steps towards meaningful change – in your home, in your place of work, in your spending habits. Be your own version of bold.

-	And find ways to join with others in imagining how the future might look different to today.

How do you exercise your imagination?

In the thresholds between what is known and what is waiting to emerge we meet courage, creativity and new clarity - awakening and revitalising us towards life and work that is meaningful to us and others.

@susandavid_phd shared today these beautiful words @susandavid_phd shared today these beautiful words on courage today. May you and I have the courage to see the ‘bothness’ of life.

“It is staggering to see the world's capacity to be both heartbreaking and astonishing.

We're young until we’re not. We're healthy until we receive a devastating health diagnosis. We're with those we love until they're taken from us. People die while the sun is shining. Forests burn while the birds sing. This "bothness" is woven into our contract with life.

Despite the existence of this persistent, often maddening duality, many of us feel societal pressure to face the world a certain way. We try to appear strong, becoming the master of being "okay," but in reality, our hearts are breaking. War is raging. Our families struggle. Everything is decidedly not "okay."

It takes courage to see ourselves and to face the true fragility of life. May courage be with you today, friends. May we not turn away from those who need to be seen—ourselves included.”

I acknowledge the Wurundjeri people on whose land I work and live, and pay respect to their elders past and present. I appreciate the rich cultural and spiritual connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples hold with this land.
